If you were seeing multiple marks, that's bracketing. If you were seeing one mark, that's exposure relative to metered (0 on the meter) as you change either the aperture or shutter speed with the main dial. In M mode on the 5DII and 6D, you either set ISO manually or if set to Auto it's fixed at ISO 400.
